Network Impact and Performance Assessment

featuring the BLAST Performance Analysis®

Ensure successful application roll-outs!

A Network Impact and Performance Assessment (aka 'NIA' or 'Network Readiness Assessment') is a detailed pre-deployment analysis & modeling activity that provides projections of:

  • The amount of additional bandwidth a new application or migration will require to perform optimally over the entire path from users to application server

  • The response times that can be expected at each remote user location...
  • ...and why.
Network Impact & Performance Assessment Report - Network Impact Projections

A Network Impact projection shows the current WAN link utilization levels (Blue), plus the new traffic levels from the new application traffic (Green), and the additional 'overhead' bandwidth that needs to be available to accomodate short-term traffic peaks (Red) to ensure optimal application response times.
(An Outgoing Traffic graph/table is not shown)
Network Impact & Performance Assessment Report - Response Time Performance Projections

A Response Time Performance projection graphically reveals the expected response times at remote user locations, and how the time is distributed between client processing, network transport, application turns delay (due to network path latency), and server processing time. An accompanying table quantifies all of the time components as well as the percentage of the response time attributable to bandwidth constraints and application turns delay.

Network Impact & Performance Assessment Report - Executive Summary Pg 1

This Executive Summary contains analysis findings for a global implementation of an externally-hosted Performance Management System application.

The first page outlined the environment, assumptions, and summary reports of the Application Performance Analysis data that supported the modeling activity.

The APA data included evidence of a relatively high number and duration of 'Server Processing Time Events' (proc times > 1 sec) that are adversely affecting end user response times regardless of network conditions.
Network Impact & Performance Assessment Report - Executive Summary Pg 2

The tables in this page summarize the network impacts and expected response times, as well as the percentage of the response times attributable to network delay.

The Conclusions & Recommendations addressed Internet Gateway links that needed bandwidth upgrades, as well as warnings that some sites would experience excessive response times due to high network path latencies and to keep an eye on server processing times from the application vendor.

A NIPA ensures the network is ready for the application... and reveals how the application will perform over the network.

A Network Impact & Performance Assessment

is the right solution for:

Implementing a new application that will be accessed by remote users

Provides crucial data that allows network and application teams to proactively manage the capacity of the enterprise WAN links and address any application performance issues that might occur within the new environment - before the implementation.

Identifying and eliminating potential performance issues before implementing a software solution that will become a support nightmare is - as they say - pricele$$.

Performing a signficant upgrade to an existing application

The network impact and performance characteristics of the new application version can be analyzed and compared to the current version, and any differences addressed.

Migrating an application to a new data center

The network impact and performance of the application in the current environment can be compared to modeling projections of impact/performance in the new environment to confirm the migration decision and identify any needed preparations.

Expanding an existing application to additional sites

Much like a new implementation, determine the additional impact on the WAN links to the new sites, including the aggregate load on common/data center links and the anticipated response time performance at the new locations.

Planning network capacity for disaster recovery data transfers

Determine the network capacity needed to complete disaster recovery data transfers to remote centers within allocated timeframes, without affecting other network services.

Features PacketIQ's specialized analysis & modeling tools & processes
PacketIQ has developed specialized tools & processes to analyze and model all of the significant factors governing application performance in network environments...

This allows the most practical, accurate, and cost effective network impact and response time projections possible to help ensure successful implementations.

A NIPA leverages data from a PacketIQ  BLAST Performance Analysis®:

B - Bandwidth allocation & usage for each WAN link to remote sites

L - Latency between the data center(s) and each remote site

A - Application Performance Analysis metrics for each application

S - Server Processing Times for various transactions / functions

T - Transaction Rates - measured / estimated/calculated concurrent user rates

in a comprehensive modeling environment...

PacketIQ's NIPA Modeling Process Diagram

...that provides:

  1. Directional network impacts for each site's WAN link - including peak loading
  2. Aggregate network impacts for common / data center / IGW WAN links
  3. Accurate / 'right-sized' bandwidth upgrade recommendations (as needed)
  4. 'Average' response times for comparing relative performance between sites
  5. Task-specific application response time projections for each individual site
  6. Response time performance 'Alerts' based on pre-established thresholds
  7. Explanation of all metrics & projections and how they inter-relate

The network and application/server analysis required for a NIPA is conducted by a fresh, unbiased set of eyes coupled with a great deal of experience in this arena and the right tools for the job - and there are often additional side benefits from this analysis in terms of identifying and rectifying performance issues that are affecting existing applications.

Network Impact & Performance Assessment deliverable reports include an Executive Summary containing concise Conclusions and specific Recommendations to address all identified issues to help ensure a successful implementation.
