Network Performance Analysis

Manage and verify end-to-end network performance!


Do you know the true bandwidth usage levels and availability across all of the LAN / MAN / WAN links between the data center and your end-user locations over the business day?     When backup data transfers start and end?

You know that latency affects application performance... but do you know what the routing and latency really is between your hosts and remote user locations?  Or if it changes?

You CAN know how your network is performing across the entire path between hosts and end-user locations - not just the individual links and devices - and ensure that the performance is optimal / acceptable... and what to do if not.

A Network Performance Analysis (NPA) is a detailed investigation of network link usage levels that leverages PacketIQ's advanced analysis tools to provide an extremely accurate, statistically-derived accounting of bandwidth levels and patterns across the 24 hour business day based on multiple days of data exported from your existing SNMP or NetFlow / sFlow Network Management Systems (or collection tools can be arranged).

Usage data from LAN/MAN/WAN links is merged in our specialized tools to reveal true bandwidth availability to user locations across multiple links and time zones over the 24-hour day and prime business periods.

This is coupled with a comprehensive routing, latency, and average effective throughput analysis from the data centers to each end-user location.

These metrics are combined into a 'Network Path Performance' report which summarizes bandwidth availability and latency over each unique server-to-user path, and whether that performance is reasonable / acceptable.

The focus and result is clear visibility and confirmation of the end-to-end performance of the network as experienced by your end-user applications.


A Network Performance Analysis includes:

BW Utilization Report
A summarized Bandwidth Utilization Report based on 30+ days of usage data. Individual 'standard' and Time of Day Analysis reports for each link are also provided.

Network Path Latency Report
The Network Path Latency summary includes variable queuing delay values.

Network Path Effective Throughput
The Network Path Effective Throughput analysis provides an average relative throughput measurement to confirm bandwidth allocations and availability assumptions.

The Network Path Performance summary includes the User to Data Center end-points, a depiction of the in-path WAN links, and a Network Path Performance metrics section.

Standard and Time of Day Bandwidth Reports 'Standard' and Time of Day Analysis bandwidth analysis reports are provided for each LAN Trunk and MAN/WAN link in the network path.

Time of Day Analysis reports provide a graphical view and statistics of bandwidth usage over a 24 hour period statistically derived from all of the values in a multi-day sample data set. This is the only accurate method of analyzing business day traffic patterns and levels.

The PacketIQ analyzer can be adapted to import bandwidth usage data from almost any NMS system that offers a Comma Seperated Value (.csv) export format and/or SQL database access.

If you do not have a NMS that meets PacketIQ requirements a suitable system can be arranged.

A Time of Day Analysis accurately tells the whole story in one glance

One of the most useful features of a Network Performance Analysis is the Time of Day Analysis reports, which provide a graph and statistical values of bandwidth usage and availability over a 24 hour period - statistically derived from multiple days of sample data. This offers an easy to comprehend visualization of typical daily usage patterns and levels without having to try to discern these by eye-balling the numerous daily spikes found in typical graphs.

Merge and Multi-Link features allow analysis of multiple related links

A Merge feature combines data from multiple links to measure total loading (useful for company merger modeling), redundant link failure loading, or combining data for multiple time periods into one report.

The Multi-Link feature combines usage data from sequential WAN links to determine true bandwidth availability across multiple hops - essential when loading varies signficantly across links and/or time zones.

Graphs and statistical data values are utilized to establish bandwidth availability

The average and peak values provided by most NMS solutions are practically useless for representing bandwidth usage levels. PacketIQ reports offer Min-Max-Average-Standard Deviation-90th-95th-99th Percentile values for each data flow direction. Percentile values, preferably 95th or 99th, combined with appropriate filtering, are the best representation of nominal usage levels across a large data set.

Least-Squares regression data for capacity trending analysis

Percent Change, Slope, Y-Intercept, and First/Last trend values across the imported data set support long-term trending analysis & forecasts.

This level of expert bandwidth analysis is made possible by leveraging the PacketIQ Bandwidth Statistical Analyzer which features advanced capabilities available nowhere else!

Routing and Latency Analysis

Periodic traceroutes and latency measurements from the data center to each end-user location allow identification of unstable routing in your Enterprise or provider networks.

PacketIQ has observed latencies in major provider networks around the globe that jumped to as much as 3X normal values - with no apparent change in routing or availabile bandwidth - and persisted for several hours to a day and then went back to nominal levels. This could result in those infamous 'slow network' reports for which a cause is never found, a waste in both user productivity and troubleshooting effort. Monitoring network routing and latencies should be included in any performance management solution.

Average Effective Throughput Analysis

PacketIQ has developed an algorithm for measuring an approximate 'effective throughput' from 'Ping' measurements using variable size payloads. This simple measurement is useful for identifying significant changes in available bandwidth and validating bandwidth allocation and availability assumptions from other analysis activities.

A Network Path Performance Report offers a quick view of the performance metrics that matter - the available bandwidth, latency, and queuing delay effects for each path between your data centers and end users!

Summarized Executive Summary
