"I use the (PacketIQ Bandwidth Statistical) analyzer almost every day for my NIA (Network Impact Assessment) work. There's a number of features that I use all the time - you can merge two graphs together for total loading, change the time zones to where the users are, set the bandwidth to match the WAN link speed, quickly filter for prime time vs non-prime time periods, adjust the date ranges, and so on - those are the obvious benefits.

But the feature I use all the time is zooming in on traffic peaks and discovering exactly when they occured, and if they are repeating. I can spot, for instance, that some event that uses a lot of bandwidth is kicking off at 3:15 to about 4:00 every morning, and once in a while it'll run until 6 AM or later. You can hover your mouse over the start of the peak, and it gives you the timestamp and data value for that point, and again at the end of the peak, so I can tell exactly when an event starts and ends. Then I can hit the scroll bar and move over and see if the same thing happens at exactly the same time the next day or multiple days.

Tracking down a recurring anomaly like that would normally require running several time-specific reports and quite a bit of time; in the bandwidth analyzer I can do the same thing in 30 seconds with one data set - that's a huge time saver. And the Time of Day Analysis feature makes it easy to spot these events.

So what's wrong with the tools I have?
The small graphs and stats values (if any) offered by most network management system reports give an inaccurate picture of true usage levels and patterns over the business day periods.

'Average' values that might accompany some NMS reports include night and weekend periods and can be less than half of normal business day usage levels. 'Peak' or 'Max' values usually represent a few short-term events that again do not accurately represent nominal usage levels. 95th Percentile values are somewhat usable, but may not accurately depict true business day usage levels because the presence of nighttime backups or other traffic pattern anomalies in the bandwidth data set affects the trend lines.

Most reports also do not clearly reveal recurring or anomalous patterns that should be scrutinized or excluded from daily usage considerations - or any way of dealing with those anomalies.

This is the table that accompanied the graph above it from a different NMS - peak and average values, and an 'Average Total' - these offer no useful information about typical usage levels or patterns across the business day, and despite the obviously excessive, recurring out-bound peaks the table's AverageOut value is only 255 Mbps.

At first glance, this link looks pretty busy... at or near saturation on a regular basis. A (non PacketIQ) network consultant actually recommended an expensive upgrade for this link - based on graphs like the above - to support a new video conferencing solution the client was planning.

But let's take another lookk...the Time of Day Analysis reports below were generated using 30 days of sample data and the PacketIQ Bandwidth Statistical Analyzer:

A standard PacketIQ Bandwidth Statistical Analysis report for the same WAN link as the graphs on the left is much more informative and provides a wide range of statistical values including least-squares trending data.

But to properly interpret and investigate the large Out-Going peaks in the 'Standard' report graph, you need  the visibility only provided by the Bandwidth Statistical Analyzer's Time of Day Analysis view, as seen below:

Simply clicking the '6AM-6PM' filter option on the PacketIQ analyzer provided a ToD view of just the business day period. The graph and 99th Percentile statistical values revealed ~700 Mbps of available bandwidth in both directions - more than enough to support video conferencing during typical business hours...avoiding an unnece$$ary upgrade.

Merge and Multi-Link features allow combined analysis of multiple related links

A Merge feature combines data from multiple links to measure total loading (can be useful for company merger total load modeling), determining redundant link failure loading, or combining data from multiple time periods for the same link into one longer-term report.

The Multi-Link feature combines usage data from sequential WAN links to determine true bandwidth availability across multiple hops - essential when loading varies signficantly across links and/or time zones.

Correct and measure utilization levels for the actual WAN link speed

The reported link speed and calculated utilization levels can be easily adjusted within the PacketIQ analyzer. This is very convenient if the bandwidth data samples are being collected from an attached router interface (100 Mbps or 1 Gbps) instead of directly from the WAN link port (which may be 6 Mbps, for example).

Easily convert usage timestamps to user location timezones

View bandwidth usage levels in local time for a given user location - not the timezone for the NMS collector. This is essential for accurate Time of Day and usage pattern analysis.

Extensive filtering capabilities

Sample data can be filtered by date, day of week, or time of day to highlight or exclude traffic periods and patterns of interest. For example, it may be desirable to filter 30 days of sample data to only report on the periods of 6AM to 6PM Monday-thru-Friday for more accurately measuring business day levels, or to specify settings to exclude a periodic backup period from the analysis.

Provides graphs and a wide range of statistical values for Data Rates, Percent Utilization, and (bandwidth) Availability

The average and peak values provided by most NMS solutions are practically useless for representing bandwidth usage levels. PacketIQ reports offer Min-Max-Average-Standard Deviation-90th-95th & 99th Percentile values for each data flow direction. Percentile values, preferably 95th or 99th, combined with appropriate filtering, are the best representation of nominal usage levels across a large data set.

Percent Change, Slope, Y-Intercept, and First/Last trend values supports long-term trending analysis & forecasts.
